Many of us regret not doing something: whether it’s professing our love to our high school sweetheart, applying for that college scholarship, or going on that amazing trip to Southeastern Asia. We find ourselves holding back for some reason, whether it’s personal vulnerability, fear, laziness, or lack of financial freedom.
The time has come to reconcile these regrets and start working in earnest towards our dreams, whether that means scraping enough money for a house down payment, planning a life-changing trip, or starting a business focused around your passion. We have only one life with which we can achieve these goals, and the race gun has already gone off.
However, gathering the courage and will to fight the urge to stay at status quo is difficult. Here are some tips to help you prepare to dive into the deep end of life and start accomplishing the desires you have had in your mind for so long:
- Prepare Financially
For many of us, the limiting factor tends to be money. We blame the lack thereof as the reason behind our “holding back.” But where there’s a will, there’s a way. Once you are serious about chasing your dream, the money will start coming in. You’ll find ways to save in your everyday lifestyle, you might have to take on some temporary additional work, compromise on your regular budget, and request some loans. This process might take some time, depending on the goal you have in mind, but this is not wasted time- it’s a chance to solidify your dream and quantify what you need exactly in order to achieve it.
- Work on Yourself
We are quick to blame the world for things that haven’t worked out or have failed in the past. However, your mind is usually the one putting up limits and keeping you from reaching for the stars. Take some time to evaluate what it is in you as a person that is holding you back. Lack of self-confidence? Shyness? Embarrassment? Before you go out into the world and challenge the other issues out there, do whatever it takes to help you overcome your personal obstacles. For some that might mean some industry-specific training, some personal coaching, or even a dental implant embellishing your smile. Heal those mental and physical wounds so that you can bound forward with confidence and meaning.
- Build a Support
No man is an island, and we as humans have come to depend on others to achieve success. Now is not the time to be selfish with you dreams, but rather share them with like-minded people who will support you and help you reach your goals. Join a network or industry group where you can find yourself mentors as well as friends who will help make your dreams come true by offering true critique, alternate ideas, or provide valuable connections. You need people who, when you retreat back into your shell in fear of the grandeur of your goals, will coax you out and help you get to work.
Yes, it’s true that some people have regrets regarding things they have done in the past. However, many more of us regret not doing something. As the hockey player Wayne Gretzky said, “you miss 100% of the shots you don’t take.” Break free and start building your financial freedom, prime yourself for the work on hand, and build a support system around yourself. After a while, nothing will seem impossible and your dreams will become your daily reality instead of a pleasant thought.
