What’s your favorite Halloween memory? Do you have a story you can share?
Some of the most vivid memories from my childhood are from trick or treating in the neighborhood near my house. Some of the families in there were crazy!
One year an adult who lived next door to my cousin dressed in a scarecrow costume with a pumpkin head (yes, a real pumpkin). He proceeded to turn all the lights off around his house, then he sat on the front porch in a rocking chair with a bowl of LARGE candy items in his lap. Like full-size Snickers, etc. The best part was that he went totally limp, like he was a decoration instead of a real person. The pumpkin head was sitting kinda crooked too.
This is the idea
This neighbor ALWAYS had something fancy set up for the kids who were trick or treating, so we couldn’t figure out why they didn’t have the lights on?.. then we noticed the very tempting bowl of candy sitting in the rocking chair and wondered “can we just take some for ourselves? Are they out of town or something? How many should we take? Wow! Huge candy bars!”
Of course, as soon as we reached into the candy bowl he proceeded to scream like a banshee and grab our arms, scaring the daylights out of us. I hated him with a passion for about 15 minutes, before we started laughing about it and telling all our friends. Definitely one of the great Halloween memories I have.
